Patient Safety Award 2025 for work on AI in Model-Guided Medicine

At the 2025 conference of the International Society for Medical Innovation and Technology (iSMIT) in Washington, D.C., I was honoured with the Patient Safety Award 2025 in recognition of his long-term work on AI in Model-Guided Medicine.

The award highlights ongoing efforts to develop transparent, safe, and clinically meaningful AI systems for decision support in medicine. It also reflects the growing importance of approaches that combine artificial intelligence with explicit clinical models, human oversight, and patient-centred safety principles.

The conference further offered an inspiring international platform for exchange on current developments in medical innovation and technology. A particular highlight was the Clinical Day at Children’s National Hospital, where several research projects demonstrated how medical technologies can be developed not only for technical excellence, but also for accessibility, affordability, and patient benefit in resource-constrained settings.

The recognition also underscores the intellectual foundations of this work, which build in part on the long-standing contributions of Prof. Heinz Lemke to Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Model Information and Model Management Systems (MIMMS), Model-Guided Medicine (MGM), and Model Identity Certificates (MICs).

The award is both an honour and an encouragement to continue advancing trustworthy AI and model-based approaches for safer healthcare.
