New BMFTR-funded project: KI-COMPASS

I am very pleased to contribute to the new BMFTR-funded project KI-COMPASS, which addresses an area I consider highly important for the future of personalized follow-up care: the combination of wearables, clinical data, machine learning, and knowledge-based AI to identify cardiovascular risks earlier in patients with gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma (GEAC).
What makes the project especially meaningful to me is that it brings together several themes that are central to my current work: continuous patient monitoring, digital patient models, trustworthy clinical AI, and the challenge of combining data-driven and knowledge-based approaches in a clinically meaningful and patient-centred way.
Within KI-COMPASS, wearables play a key role because they can provide continuous health-related data from everyday life and thereby complement clinical findings and point-in-time examinations. These data are intended to be combined with machine learning methods and knowledge-based AI approaches in order to develop digital patient models and support a more precise assessment of cardiovascular risk in cardio-oncological follow-up care.
The project includes the development of an AI-supported cardio-oncology follow-up app, a clinical dashboard, and a quality-assured backend for model management. For me, this is particularly important because the goal is not only to collect and analyse data, but to make them secure, traceable, transparent, and clinically usable.
KI-COMPASS is carried out by a strong interdisciplinary consortium consisting of Hahn-Schickard, BiSigma GmbH, the University Medical Center Freiburg with the Center for Gastrointestinal Tumors, the Heart Center, and the Data Integration Center, as well as the European patient organization Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE).
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) within the framework of the National Decade against Cancer, with a total funding volume of €3.63 million. I also highly appreciate the support of the project management agency VDI/VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH.
Another aspect I find very valuable is the exchange beyond the individual project itself. Through the initiative of a joint kick-off event, the funded projects had the opportunity to get to know each other early on. Since then, cross-project exchange has already started, including discussions on data collection and processing, with the broader aim of overcoming isolated approaches and enabling stronger long-term impact.
I am looking forward to sharing more about KI-COMPASS, its research questions, and its next steps over time.
