ME AS A SCIENTIST

While we increasingly apply various technologies to improve our life by supporting, simplifying and increasing freedom in it, in medicine we are worried to lose control over technology the more it becomes autonomous. Technology is there to apply, especially in medicine where it can increase patient safety and quality of life.

My research is in Medical Informatics with a background in machine intelligence-based clinical decision support systems, shared decision making in multidisciplinary teams, and expert modeling of and interaction with computer-based knowledge models.

For my PhD, I worked at the Innovation Center Computer Assisted Surgery of the Universität Leipzig focusing on patients with complex cancer cases. I did my first PostDoc at the European Space Agency in Netherlands focused on astronauts during space exploration when medical experts are not available and another at the German Heart Center in Berlin focusing back again more on patients.

In my current PostDoc in the Human-Centered Computing group at the Freie Universität Berlin, I am particularly interested in creating a »symbiosis« between humans and machines in a digital operating room. I aim to explore possible capabilities (e.g., assistance, transparency, and feedback) of this »symbiosis« in robotic-assisted surgery's joint activity. The goal is for the robots to be able to work completely autonomously and for the surgeon to have full control over the robots.

POST DOCTORAL
RESEARCHER

Mario joined the Human-Centered Computing Group of Prof. Müller-Birn. He is focusing on creating a symbiosis between human and machine in the operating room.
As part of his new position, he is funded by and also joined the Cluster of Excellence »Matters of Activity« - Image, Space and Materials.

POST DOCTORAL
RESEARCHER

Focus of the project Virtual Heart Team is an AI-based system to support heart teams in therapy decision-making.
Our latest research examines the potential outcomes of critical Type A patients. In addition, we are exploring the surgeon expertise required to achieve the desired outcome for these type A patients.

The decision support system is based on Bayesian networks and so far it seems that Bayesian networks are very good at being transparent and reliable predictors.

POST DOCTORAL
RESEARCH FELLOW

Biomedical Data Scientist, Human Research Office, ESTEC, ESA, Netherlands.

Focus of Mario's work was to setup a medical database system for data from ESA astronauts and ESA's simulation studies. For this, he worked closely together with his colleagues from the ESA Astronaut Center near Cologne, Germany. In addition, he had the pleasure of coordinating the scientific projects various ground-based simulation studies.

With the support of ESA and the International Conference on Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery, he initiated and organized twice the conference session Digital Space Medicine together with the most experienced active ESA flight surgeon Ulrich Straube and always supported by New York radiologist Leonard Berliner, Neurosurgeon Russel J. Andrews and Medical Robotics pioneer Russel H. Taylor.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATE & PHD CANDIDATE

Mario joined the group Digital Patient Model (DPM) at ICCAS, Leipzig.
He developed multi-disciplinary therapy decision support systems to support expert decisions.
The scope of his work covered new methodologies and tools for decision modelling and model interaction, using knowledge-based machine intelligent approaches, specifically Bayesian networks. The success of his work was possible through the close and open-minded team work with his clinical colleagues from the University Hospital Leipzig, specifically Dr. Matthäus Stöhr, as well as the inspiring and trustful super vision of Prof. Heinz U. Lemke, PhD and Prof. Andreas Dietz, MD.

Moreover, he had a research stay at the University of Pittsburgh, in USA and Polytechnika Bialystok, in Poland, under the supervision of Prof. Marek Druzdzel.

Further fruitful collaborations with Dr. Jan Wojdziak (Gesellschaft für Technische Visualistik mbH), Prof. Bernhard Preim and Dr. Steffen Oeltze-Jafra (University of Magdeburg), and many others had an essential impact on Mario's work.

Oktober 2006 - March 2013

STUDENT

Freie Universität Berlin
University of Limerick
ICCAS Universität Leipzig

Mario studied Computer Science at the Freie Universität of Berlin, Germany. During his studies he worked for ICCAS, Leipzig, as a student assistant and graduated in 2013 with his major in medical informatics and minor in psychology. In 2011, he studied abroad for one semester at the University of Limerick, in Irland.

His diploma thesis was about Clinical Decision Support Systems, specifically diagnosing Laryngeal Cancer, under the super vision of Prof. Heinz U. Lemke.
